ME-Portfolios: Developing Metacognition and Defining Identity using Electronic Portfolios
Kate McCarthy and Becky Crawford
How do we know what students know about themselves? All students, especially fifth graders, are constantly seeking to define their personalities and find their niche in a classroom community. Fifth grade students are also becoming more abstract thinkers who are ready to ponder their identity and the world around them more deeply. As a fifth grade teacher, I was looking for ways to document students' social emotional and academic strides using technology. Becky Crawford, Baker's technology specialist, and I collaborated to find tools that will help our students express themselves and help us track their development throughout the year. We piloted e-portfolios with fifth graders this year in the hopes of expanding the program to the rest of school next year.

Dear Group,
We apologize that you did not get feedback before your last meeting. It seems like all of you individually would benefit from chunks of time and expertise to explore your respective areas of interest. We want to support you and provide those chunks of time. Could you each prepare a short proposal of what you do with a chunk of time and submit it to us on the wiki. Please include: how much time you need, your preferred dates and times, a specific action plan for that time, outcomes, and desired expertise or assistance. We do think there may be some people at NLU who may be of help to you that we can arrange a get together.

Thanks! The Group

Inquiry Group Update
Date: October 24th, 2011

Names: Becky, Kim, Megan, and Kate

Primary contact person: Kate

Statement summarizing focus:

Where are you individually?
  • Becky wants to do a practice session with the student response systems to familiarize ourselves with the tools. Megan wants to use visible thinking strategies using the student response systems.
  • Kate is going to use Glogster with her students in order to create graphic representations of success.
  • Kim is working to understand and apply the functions of her FTP and Moodle site.
  • Becky wants to collaborate with teachers create rubrics or baseline guidelines for technology-based projects. She hopes that these rubrics will help show the progression of students through the grades and could lead to technology benchmarks.
  • Megan is exploring some software that she could use for visible thinking (Sketch-Up, Inspiration, Comic Life, Promethean, etc.)

Where are you as a group? We are a group of individuals enjoying a balance of collaboration and parallel play.

Inquiry Group Update
Date: September 30, 2011

Names: Kate McCarthy, Kim Cripe, Mary Roth, Megan Cawley, Becky Crawford

Primary contact person: Kate McCarthy

Statement summarizing focus: We are looking at metacognition and assessment using technology.

Where are you individually?

Group broke into smaller groups:

Becky and Kim set up domain for Kim's Moodle.
Main objectives for the site: Rich interactive experience for students, inspire student collaboration, meet the learning needs of the students, support their learning on a immediate level, encourage daily/weekly reflection.
Student role: Requires daily/weekly participation, requires independent and collaborative learning
Next step will be to enroll Becky as a "student" and get feedback
I will also be visiting forums and webinars to see how science teachers are using Moodle in their classrooms.

Mary and Megan are interested in making students' thinking visible through the use of technology enhanced assessment. They are researching and coming up with a list of ways and resources to incorporate the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in collaborative problem solving. They have signed up with the ATC21S which is a project sponsored by Cisco, Intel and Microsoft to research and develop new approaches, methods and technologies for the success of 21st century classrooms.

Kate and Becky looked at the students' introductions as well as the programs that they plan on using this year, including Tagxedo, Shelfari, and Glogster. They also discussed how to evaluate the students' portfolios, and whether the rubrics should be public or private.

Where are you as a group?
We are a group of individuals.

Possibilities for April symposium contribution: Poster session, presentation, workshop, panel, discussion facilitator, show video of classroom/discussion, ask students to participate in panel, show artifacts from class, lead activity. These are some ideas, but remember that there are many other possibilities. Feel free to think outside the box!

Where are you going individually? (Please include initial idea for the symposium in April):

Kate and Becky are piloting the e-portfolios with my fifth grade class doing my Tech time. We are planning on doing a workshop to show students' portfolios and have teachers try out the programs we used.

Mary and Megan are still at the research stage, coming to this idea late. Probably we would be giving out whatever we find as handouts and perhaps talking to others to get their ideas.

Kim may be able to demo a moodle site with student feedback

Where are you going as a group? (Please include initial idea for the symposium in April):

We will continue to work on our individual projects, while checking in with each other during meetings and supporting each other's work.

Inquiry Group Update
Date: 5/16
Names: Kim, Megan, Becky, and Kate

Primary contact person: Kate

Statement summarizing focus: How to use technology as an assessment tool

What we have done so far:
  • Kim is looking at different technology-based asssesment and communication tools to use in the Middle School
    • Megan and Kim say blogs in the MS are ineffective
  • Becky and Kate are continuing to work with their test group on e-portfolios

Plans for next year:
  • Kim: build a Moddle site over the summer and implement it with the eighth grade class in the fall. Kim wants feedback from the group to see how well the program fits into curriculum and classroom routines and structures.
  • Megan: will investigate Moodle and Edmoto over the summer. She may work with Kim on implementing one of these programs in the fall.
  • Kate: implement electronic portfolios in her classroom using Wikis and the structure used in test group this year. She would also like to do video interviews with students to document the process. Kate would also like to create rubrics with students to evaluate their portfolios. Kate needs to think about scheduling tech time for portfolios.
  • Becky will see if you can give all of the MS students Baker email addresses. Becky also wants to implement e-portfolios in TIM-starting in first grade, and she would like to give a workshop on e-portfolios during August meetings. Becky is thinking about creating cross-curricular/cross-grade web pages for TIM Interim or MS as well.

Primary contact person: Kate

Statement summarizing focus: How to use technology as an assessment tool

What we have done so far:
  • Becky introduced Kate to different tools that could be used in the e-portfolio.
  • Kate has made part of her model portfolio on her class' Wiki using Voki to make an avatar, Wordle to describe her learning style, and images with captions.
  • Becky found students from grades 3-6 to try making their own portfolios on a Wiki page that she created.
  • Kate and Becky described the components of the e-portfolio that students will be creating:
    • Learner's Profile
    • Letter to the audience
    • Goals
    • Collected work
    • Reading Log using Shelfari
    • Links to student's interests

What we are doing next:
  • Kate and Becky will be meeting with students to introduce the portfolio. They will meet with these students weekly so that they can create their own portfolios.

What we need:
TIME!
    • Would you like to collaborate with/get support from anyone from NLU? If so, do you have a certain person in mind? What kind of support would you like?
      • At this point, no.

Statement summarizing focus: How to use technology as an assessment tool

What we have done so far:
  • Looked at survey results:
    • How can these guide us?
    • What trends do we see?
      • We noticed that the 15 teachers who responded use similar forms of technology (Word, PowerPoint, Wiki, etc.
      • We would like to show teachers how they can build on these programs and use them in different ways (ie using a Wiki for student portfolios)
      • We would like to hear back from more teachers, and then possibly send out another survey
      • We would like to teach different technology-based assessments tools to teachers during faculty meetings
  • Becky-using student-response devices to increase engagement and motivation amongst students
  • Megan would like to use survey results to create a scope and sequence document for Technology that could inform the Curriculum and Instruction Committee
  • Finding our focus: are we all interesting in trying out portfolios with our students?

What we are doing next:
  • Kate: making a model of a portfolio using the Wiki
  • Kim: sending out survey again
  • Becky: providing support with portfolios and writing grant proposals

What we need:
Nothing right now, except for cooperative technology :)
      • Would you like to collaborate with/get support from anyone from NLU? If so, do you have a certain person in mind? What kind of support would you like?
        • At this point, no.
